Good times this past weekend in AC. Phish played a 3 night run ending on the 31st with their 6th Musical Halloween costume! This years album was “Waiting for Columbus” by the Southern rock band Little Feat. It was okay, not my personal fave. Though the opportunity to hear Time Loves a Hero live was a personal moment for me. I used to listen to the bootleg of the time they played it at Hamilton College in 88. I was living up on Mt. Hood at the time and had a cassette tape (old school or just old?..lol) of the show. That song will forever remind me of that mountain.

Another highlight of the show was the Spooky in the first set and the whole third set was pretty good. The rest I thought was a bit of a snooze fest. Now Saturday night’s show on the other hand …FIRE!! That was the show to see for sure.

Me and some friends enter the Phish halloween costume contest.

In art news I was asked to do the poster for the Mockingbird Foundations Poker Tournament. Phamily Poker Classic took place on Saturday afternoon at the Tropicana. It was organized by Kevin Young and Mike Golan along with Jamey Brill of Cardboard Spaceship. Jamey made it the final table playing for Feed South Africa . I was on hand to sign some of the posters given out to players. The top 10 players received a nicer copy of the poster on 100lb felt cover signed and numbered. The only copies available for sale come from my personal stock artist edition, also on the nicer paper and there are only 13. I’ll be releasing these later this week to my mailing list. To get onboard sign up here

Lastly I had an awesome time creating my personal poster to commemorate the weekend. Both the drawing and the printing was done by me in my new basement studio. I was told by a number of people it is my best to date (though I secretly think last years blacklight print is). The poster was printed on Midnight Blue Royal Complements 100lb cover stock at size 23.5″x10″. It was an edition of 50 printed in silver swirl and black. The image is of a Day of the Dead mermaid laying in the sand spreading out cards of the past 5 albums Phish played, in her right hand she holds the 2010 card that only she can see. On her forehead is the fish, lizards and mockingbird. The Atlantic City is hand drawn type reminiscent of HBOs Boardwalk Empire but instead of lights there’s skulls inside. The 4 card symbols watch from the corner and the tag at the bottom of the rope frame reads Happy Halloween. These things FLEW out of my hands and I can’t thank you all enough for the purchases and support. There maybe a couple remaining in the store. I also had a great time matching my costume to my poster, a tradition I started last year with my black zombie unicorn.

So in all the rush and hubbub of the summer months, I’ve not posted anything in months. Summer was great I released 3 posters on tour. The BBFCFM at Spac, The Virgin G summer Tour poster and The Greek. The Spac and Greek we hand printed in my brand new art studio! It’s been years (like 12) since I had screened printed anything. I forgot how much I truly enjoy it. someone should write a book called Zen and the Art of Screenprint, it seriously is the only repetitive action I’ve found that I enjoy and relaxes me! I have to say that my printing skills have yet to reach my illustrative skill levels but I’m working on it!

I am throwing a BIG, BIG party in San Francisco on Aug 4th. The night before the Berkley Phish shows, so buy your plane tickets and make your plans accordingly. It’s a two part event combining a legendary meeting and exhibit of psychedelic and visionary artists from many backgrounds and styles coupled with a late night dj and projectionist set a la the 60’s acid tests. This hopes to become a bi-annual, bi-coastal party so please planning on coming to the inaugural kick off in San Fran. I couldn’t think of a better city!!

Much of the idea and imagery came from reading Whitley Strieber’s book, Transformation. In it is mentioned the fact that some people believe a taller more humanoid race of visitors (not the greys) are directly related to the ancient Celts. In his book Strieber relates the story of Betty Andreasson Luca who channeled a discussion between two beings speaking “star language” a language easily translated into Gaelic. ( for an interview and more about this go here : Betty Andreasson Luca ) This shirt was created in 1997 a time in which Celtic Knot work was seeing a surge of interest in the tattoo field and popular culture. I myself am 5/8 Irish and so all these things converged to create this image. Also must be mentioned this shirt was sold by not only me but also my good friend, Vanessa Singer, I think this shirt will always link us in peoples minds, which is nice.

The front of the shirt has 4 intertwined figures representing the 4 tribes of the earth: the black peoples, the white peoples, the yellow peoples and the red peoples. They are hopelessly intertwined in a circle representing our earth. They have “alien” heads as there has been worldwide connection to the “vistors” by all tribes of man written in ancient scripts worldwide. In the circle are swirls of “water” also a nod to our evolutionary beginnings on this planet of water. The stars and solid circles (planets) represent the wider universe we are all a part of. Around the outside ring you have tied into the knot work: (starting at top and moving clockwise) A UFO, an infinity symbol, UFO, star, UFO, man (head resting in hands a la The Thinker by Rodin), UFO, heart,…repeat….

The back of the shirt has a image ripped from the Book of Kells . By replacing the heads of the image of Jesus and the Apostles with heads of greys I make the statement that none of us know how much influence our civilizations, religions and political bodies have had by the repeated presence seen and unseen of the “vistors”. I like the fact that “Jesus” has the swirl of water on his chest and that the “Apostles” are holding infinity symbols on the end of their staffs tying together again the earth and universe. The quote is from Whitley Strieber’s poem “There Is Something More” found in the opening page of his book Transformation. It alludes to the fact that none of us know truly who the “vistors” are, what their purpose here is and ultimately what they want with us but when it all comes down “there will be great wonder”

The visitors are sweeping up

from where we buried them

under layers of denial and false assurance

to deliver what is truly a message

from beyond: There is something more

to us and our universe

and it is rich with the power of the unknown.

It will be incredibly hard for us

to achieve real relationships with the visitors.

But also, I can tell you from experience

that there will be wonder.

There will be great wonder.

Whitley Strieber

As we all know Haiti was basically destroyed by a massive earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010; a country seemingly incapable of surviving a disaster of this magnitude. As the months have gone by though a funny thing has happened. The world has watched while the true spirit of Haiti has risen out of the darkness. Amid the outpouring of aid the Haitian people have repeatedly been photographed smiling, dancing and helping each other. Obviously much still needs to be done and help will continue to be needed from outside sources but I think the true source of what is going to get Haiti back on her feet has been shown in those photographs. It is the indomitable spirit of the Haitians, the ability to smile in the face of destruction that in the end will recreate their country; stronger then before.

To try to do my part I have created a limited edition poster for THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT ( www.thehaitiposterproject.com ). THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT was launched three days after the January 12th, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The project is a collaborative effort by the design community to help effect change through our work. Signed and numbered, limited edition posters have been donated by designers and artists from around the world. All money raised will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. This brilliant idea was started by Leif Steiner and Josh Higgins, who have previously organized the HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT for Katrina victims in 2005 and the 2007 SO-CAL FIRE POSTER PROJECT, respectively.

The final print fresh out of the box!

Below you can see some of my process getting to the final image. My original idea was to have a whole family on the ruins waving the Haitian flag. This idea was okay but I felt maybe not so “erin-ish”. Eventually I grabbed the face of the mother and youngest child and put them in a new composition incorporating the imagery of serpents and rainbows, a nod to the age old religion of voodoo and the Haitian peoples strong ties to the spirit world. This is a stronger composition and also acknowledges the many people lost to the spirit world during this tragedy. The printers at Half and Half studios ( http://www.thehalfandhalf.com/ )did a beautiful job printing these. The final is a 18″x24″ , 4 color print. The edition is 50 S/N and will be available here : http://ww.thehaitiposterproject.com/posters/view/374 . Please go to the site and buy a poster. It doesn’t have to be mine!

It’s been a minute since I’ve blogged. Hard thing to get used to but I’m gonna work on updating you all more often. There’s lots going on. This past weekend was my first foray into the world of comic book conventions. For those of you who don’t know I spent around two years working with a wonderful woman and artist named Stavit Allweis ( http://www.countercomics.com/ ) as her inker and colorist. If you scroll down to the bottom of her blog you’ll see some of our work together in the slideshow. Please check out her work. The photo-comic she is presently working on is a huge undertaking and epic in it’s reach. I’m totally impressed by this woman!

Anyway I love comic books and working with Stevie has really inspired me to constantly consider publishing one of my own. I’m proud to announce that my first works is now in progress. In order to light a bit of a fire under my ass and really start getting involved in the scene, I participated at MOCCA (museum of comic and cartoon art) comi-con this past weekend. Stevie and I shared a table with yet another fabulous woman and artist Maggie Fishman. Pictured to the left is Stevie, her daughter Emma and I hard a work. The event was a great success! I met some really interesting people, got very inspired, made some sales and of course bought a bunch of work from other people.

Stay tuned for more on my upcoming book. The first chapter should be arriving this summer!

The walls are covered with the work some of the finer jamband poster artists around. In the cases you can find quality glass pieces and some well chosen clothing items round out the scene. Should you find yourself wandering around upstate New York drop by. Also keep an ear to the ground if Phish plays SPAC.
